Missing Values?
Is there a certain value or ethos of the Canadian Forces that is currently not listed in the proposed “Chapters” section that you feel should be added?
Well, this is your chance to let us know. List it here on this page as a comment and we will look at it for possible inclusion in the book.
Thanks!
Courage
“Humanity”
I do not know of a single theatre of operations where Canadians served wherein a humanitarian project of some kind was not undertaken. In the Golan we supported an orphanage on each side of the border. In Afghanistan Canadian troops are very active in support of orphanages and schools. It’s the best part of who we are.
Dedication
It’s funny how we often see the same faces when we’re sent off over-seas. This is a common trait that we see in those who truly believe in the cause and their buddies next to them. There are guys who have been through hell and made it back and become truly brothers for they have trained and fought, laughed and cried, and ultimately, lived and died. For those who came back, they have accomplished many great things in the midst of dust and uncertainty. Now, we are back home remembering our Fallen Comrades and helping those who were injured in the line of duty because that’s what true brothers do…
“Strength”
It takes real strength to be able to walk away from their families for 6 months (or more) and face uncertainty. Knowing what has happened in the past but understanding that this is their job and that there is a mission that must be completed.
on the other hand……
It also takes a strong family to understand that they have to go and that they must continue on without them, wondering if and when they will return home safely.
Honour
My Grandfather when asked what he did during the war responded with this: “…what we do is not for glory it is for the protection of that for which we love…those of us who have lost blood on soil other than our own was not for glory, it is for peace. And if no one ever knows what we have done that is fine…we do.”
Loyalty
As Woodrow Wilson said, “Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice.”
Remembrance
The four values of the Canadian Army ethos are: Duty, Loyalty, Integrity and Courage (Moral and Physical)
Compassion
in deferrence to peacekeeping, peacemaking and support to Canadians.
All the best, I really look forward to the publishing of this exciting work.
Good Day Silvia, I hope that all is well. Humanity is our core. Children of all wars / conflicts are the one’s who suffer the most. As a Canadian foot Soldier our moral ethics to protect, secure, and help the unfortunate is what separates the Canadian Soldier from other nations. During my tour in Rwanda one of my tasks was to care for 3000 orphans in 11 different camps. Although difficult, I reflect on this task as a Soldier and a Father and am extremely proud of the care we provided. The orphanages / schools of Afghanistan are well looked after by the Canadian Soldier in which they are so proud of this opportunity to pass on what they believe in.
All the best to you and congrats on the excellent work.
